Short hops

• Three Padres players have been elected or selected to play for the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 17 in Reno. Catcher Rene Rivera was elected by fans to the team, while reliever Colt Hynes and infielder Dean Anna were selected by PCL managers and officials. Rivera (.338) and Anna (.351) are off to fast starts offensively for Triple-A Tucson. Hynes has a 1.73 ERA in 37 games between Double-A San Antonio and Tucson.

• The Padres have signed left-hander Clay Zavada to a Minor League contract and assigned him to San Antonio. Zavada had a 1.65 ERA this season with the independent Gary South Shore RailCats. Zavada, 29, posted a 3.35 ERA in his rookie season with the D-backs in 2009. He hasn't pitched in the Major Leagues since.

• Shortstop Everth Cabrera, playing in his first Minor League rehabilitation game for Class A Fort Wayne, was 0-for-3 with a strikeout on Tuesday against South Bend. He played six innings in the field. He'll play another game there Wednesday before the team makes a decision on if he needs more time in the Minors to test his strained left hamstring or if he's ready to rejoin the big league team.
