Short hops

• The Padres still haven't named a starter for Wednesday's game against the D-backs. That spot formerly belonged to Volquez, who was designated for assignment on Saturday. Left-hander Robbie Erlin, currently with Triple-A Tucson, is a potential option. There's a small chance that Bass, who was recalled from Tucson on Monday, could make that start as well.

• Outfielder Kyle Blanks started his Minor League rehabilitation stint Sunday with Triple-A Tucson, going 0-for-3. He could potentially play in Tucson's final eight games of the season, starting Monday. Black said that Blanks could join Double-A San Antonio or Class A Fort Wayne in the playoffs in order to get more at-bats as he comes back from an injury to his left Achilles that has caused him to miss the last 38 games.
