Short hops

• Outfielder Carlos Quentin, who left Sunday's game with a right groin strain against Colorado, is a few days away from returning to the lineup, said general manager Josh Byrnes. Quentin will not need a disabled list stint, Byrnes said, adding that "there's a pretty good chance he could get back in the outfield by the road trip." The Padres open a three-game road trip in Arizona on Monday.

• Pitcher Casey Kelly, on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment with Double-A San Antonio, had some soreness in his right arm after his last start and will miss one start. Byrnes expects him to resume starting after skipping that start. Kelly, on the road back from Tommy John surgery in 2013, has made four appearances, posting a 2.21 ERA in 20 1/3 innings. He tossed six scoreless innings the last time out against Frisco on May 17.
