Smoke signals

• Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and first baseman Nick Swisher both received a scheduled day off from being in the starting lineup on Thursday. Cabrera, who was activated from the disabled list on Wednesday after dealing with a right quad injury, is slated to play in one of the games in Friday's doubleheader against the White Sox. Francona said Swisher will likely play in both of Friday's games: one at first base and one at designated hitter.

• Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis entered Thursday having reached base via a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 28 consecutive games for the Indians. In that span, Kipnis had hit .364 (36-for-99) with 16 runs, 21 RBIs and a 1.064 OPS. The second baseman headed into Thursday's action with a .405 average in the month of June.

• Indians right-handers Brett Myers and Blake Wood, who are both on the disabled list coming back from right elbow injuries, moved their Minor League rehab assignments to Double-A on Thursday. Both were scheduled to log one inning for the Aeros.
