Snake bites

• Third baseman Eric Chavez is feeling good and getting close to swinging a bat, according to manager Kirk Gibson. Chavez is on the 15-day disabled list due to a tear in his right oblique muscle.

"That news is somewhat encouraging so far," Gibson said.

• A second MRI on left-hander Matt Reynolds confirmed the previous diagnosis of a slight tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, which will prevent him from throwing for the next four to six weeks. Gibson estimated that it would likely take another month after that for Reynolds to work his way back to the Majors.
