Sore left wrist keeps Arcia out of opener

DETROIT -- Rookie outfielder Oswaldo Arcia has been dealing with a sore left wrist stemming from a diving play in the outfield on Thursday, and was held out of the lineup against the Tigers on Tuesday.

Arcia, who is day to day, didn't tell team trainers about the severity of the injury and tried to play it through it. But he went just 1-for-9 at the plate since injuring the wrist and finally told head trainer Dave Pruemer about his injury before the series against the Tigers.

"He didn't tell the trainers, so I think Dave was a little upset with him for not saying anything," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "You have to get treatment if your wrist is bothering you. And, obviously, his wrist is still bothering him, but he didn't let anybody know that. So it's a bad way to go about your business. And now I don't know how many days we'll be without him."

Arcia will now get treatment for his wrist, but it leaves the bench thin, as the Twins are carrying 13 pitchers -- including nine relievers -- after recalling right-hander Michael Tonkin from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.

"He'll take some anti-inflammatories and will get it worked on, so it's not expected to be a long-term thing," Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said. "So it's another day-to-day thing. But if we would've known, he could've had treatment."
