Red Sox recall OF Che-Hsuan Lin; option 1B Mauro Gomez to Triple-A Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today recalled outfielder Che-Hsuan (pronounced Chay-shwan) Lin from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned first baseman Mauro Gomez to Triple-A Pawtucket.  Lin will be active for today’s game in Philadelphia, wearing No. 67.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington. 

For the 23-year-old Lin, this will be his second Major League stint.  He was also with the club earlier in the season on April 14 and made his Major League debut that day as a defensive replacement in center field against the Rays, becoming the first Taiwanese-born player to appear in a game for the Red Sox and the eighth Major Leaguer from Taiwan overall in Big League history.  In 36 games with the PawSox this season, including 34 contests in center field and three in right field, he is 32-for-125 (.256) with seven doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI, 13 runs, 20 walks and five stolen bases, including a .309 clip (17-for-55) with 13 walks in 17 May games.  In 550 minor league games in the Boston system since signing as an international free agent on June 8, 2007, the right-handed batter has compiled a .257 average (542-for-2,108) with 88 doubles, 21 triples, 22 homers, 202 RBI, 348 runs, 281 walks and 135 stolen bases.

Gomez, 27, had been selected to Boston on May 13 and appeared in two games in his first Major League stint, going 0-for-2 at the plate.  In 34 games with Pawtucket in 2012, he leads the PawSox with 10 homers, 11 doubles (tied), 22 extra-base hits (also one triple), 33 RBI and 83 total bases while batting .294 (40-for-136) with 22 runs scored and eight walks.  Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on February 2, the right-handed batter is a career .278 hitter (792-for-2,847) with 191 doubles, 12 triples, 116 homers, 471 RBI, 393 runs scored and 184 walks in nine minor league seasons in the Rangers (2004-09), Braves (2010-11) and Red Sox (2012) systems.
