Romero to join Mariners Caravan for first week

SEATTLE -- Outfielder Stefen Romero has been added to the first week of the Mariners Caravan, joining relief pitcher Charlie Furbush when the group hits the road starting Tuesday.

The three-week Winter Caravan will make stops in about two dozen communities across the Northwest between Jan. 6-23, hosting numerous elementary school assemblies and Boys & Girls Club appearances as well as several free public autograph and photo sessions.

Romero replaces reliever Brandon Maurer, who was traded to the Padres last week for outfielder Seth Smith.

Relievers Danny Farquhar and Dominic Leone, outfielder James Jones, catcher Mike Zunino and starting pitcher James Paxton are tentatively scheduled for appearances in the final two weeks.

The opening leg of the tour begins in Bremerton and Silverdale in Kitsap County, Wash., and will feature Furbush and Romero along with announcer Rick Rizzs and the Mariners Moose. The tour will eventually make its way as far north as Vancouver, B.C., south to Portland, Ore., and east to Spokane, Wash.

Day 1 stops will include a D.R.E.A.M. Team assembly for students at Silverdale Elementary from 2:30-3 p.m. PT and an appearance at the Henry T. Schatz Branch Boys & Girls Club in Tacoma from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

The first week of the tour will also include stops in Lacey, Longview and Vancouver, Wash., as well as Portland. Announcers Dave Valle and Dave Henderson will join the tour for one day each during the first week.

A schedule of public appearances for the Caravan is available at www.mariners.com/caravan. It will be updated regularly with events and activities.
