Source: Nationals strike deal with Drew

Veteran infielder hit 17 homers with Yankees last season

WASHINGTON -- In need of infield depth, the Nationals have agreed to terms with Stephen Drew, a baseball source confirmed to MLB.com on Tuesday. Drew will earn $3 million plus a possible $1.25 million in incentives. The club has yet to confirm the signing.

For Drew, he will be reunited with general manager Mike Rizzo, who was with the D-backs when they selected the left-handed hitter in the first round of the 2004 Draft. Rizzo was Arizona's scouting director at the time.

Drew played with the Yankees last season, hitting .201 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs while playing mostly second base. He has played most of his career at shortstop and could battle Danny Espinosa for the starting job. Drew could also be a backup for Daniel Murphy at second base.

Drew, 32, has been in the Major Leagues for 10 years and has also played with the Red Sox, Athletics and D-backs. He helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2013.
