Stewart to DL with bruised hand

TORONTO -- Another Angels third baseman is going on the shelf.

Ian Stewart was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday one day after he was hit on the left hand by a pitch from Blue Jays reliever Aaron Loup. X-rays came back negative, but the 29-year-old's hand was badly bruised.

The Angels promoted Luis Jimenez from Triple-A Salt Lake, and he will start at third base on Monday.

"It's still very sore today," said manager Mike Scioscia. "A lot of the time the X-rays can come back negative and you still might find something down the road. You take your time with it and hopefully it won't be too long until he can get back to baseball activities … but right now we want to exercise caution to make sure he's OK."

The Angels were already dealing with the loss of third baseman David Freese, who's on the DL with a fracture in his right middle finger.

Scioscia said Freese has been making progress and has started to swing the bat, but he's still not throwing.

"Right now it's still a little sore," he said. "[Throwing the ball] is probably the last thing that's going to come ... He's not that far behind, he's made a lot of progress."
