SU2C auction winner joins Yankees' booth

NEW YORK -- Chris Russo was still beaming on the car ride home from his experience at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.

As the prize for winning the Stand Up 2 Cancer auction, Russo got to experience being a "reporter for a day" by getting to call a couple of innings of Thursday's game between the Tigers and Yankees in the broadcast booth.

Russo had done broadcasting camps in the past, but that paled in comparison to this.

"Exciting, that's one word to describe it," Russo said from the broadcast booth. "Little nervous before I got in here, but there's very nice people in here that welcomed me."

Russo's father, Robert, jumped at the auction as soon as he saw it, knowing his son is an aspiring broadcaster and that it would benefit a good cause. All the proceeds from the auction went to Stand Up 2 Cancer.

This could have also served as an early birthday present Chris, who turns 16 on Saturday.

"He loves it," Robert said. "I know that this is something he wants to do."

Jamal Collier is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
