Escobar day to day with bruised right thumb

Rays shortstop removed from game for pinch-hitter prior to third inning

ST. PETERSBURG -- Yunel Escobar was lifted from Friday night's game vs. the Indians due to a bruised right thumb prior to the start of the third inning.

The Rays' shortstop booted a sure double-play ball that would have ended the first inning, but that was the only play he figured into prior to his departure from the game.

His status is day to day.

"I don't think it's anything," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Escobar was scheduled to hit in the bottom of the third, but Logan Forsythe took his place in the batting order. Forsythe is playing second base, while Ben Zobrist shifted from second base to shortstop.
