Tex, Youk set to begin rehab stints at Double-A

NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis will join Double-A Trenton on Wednesday as they begin their respective Minor League rehabilitation stints.

Teixeira and Youkilis each had five at-bats in extended spring training games on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., and are expected to be in Trenton's lineup for Wednesday's 10:35 a.m. ET game, as well as Thursday's 7:05 p.m. contest against Erie.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said there is a chance that both Teixeira and Youkilis could join the big league club on Friday against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

"I think it's a possibility for both of them," Girardi said. "I have said all along it depends on how they feel, physically and mentally, is when you decide to activate them."

Additionally on Tuesday, left-hander Andy Pettitte threw 76 pitches in a simulated game in Tampa and reported no issues with his strained left trapezius muscle. Pettitte is eligible to come off the disabled list on June 2.

Girardi also said that right-hander Michael Pineda, who was believed to be on the cusp of beginning a Minor League rehab assignment, had a slight setback in an extended spring game on Tuesday.

"Pineda was throwing the ball extremely well today and cracked a nail, so they took him out of the game," Girardi said. "It had nothing to do with his arm."
