Texas infielder Weiss has big league bloodlines

Erich Weiss plays the game like he grew up around someone who played it. That's because his father, Gary, spent parts of two seasons in the big leagues. The University of Texas infielder knows how to hit, with a quick stroke that allows him to send line drives to all fields when he's going right, something that didn't happen too much this spring.

Regardless, the Pirates selected Weiss in the 11th round with their first pick on Day 3 of the First-Year Player Draft -- 329th overall. He batted .299 with 24 RBIs and one homer, seven doubles and three triples this season for the Longhorns.

There isn't much power now, but he has room to add strength, so a bit more pop might be on the way. Weiss is a solid runner and plays the game the right way. The only big knock on Weiss is his defense, which is fringy at best.

Without a true defensive profile, he might best be suited for a super-utility role in the future.
