Avila to seek additional opinion on knee

DETROIT -- Tigers catcher Alex Avila will seek another opinion on his ailing left knee, visiting Dr. Kyle Anderson.

Anderson will be the third doctor Avila has consulted on the knee, which has been diagnosed with a loose body. It'll be his second examination. A second doctor looked at the initial results on Sunday.

No final decision has been made on surgery, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Avila has never had surgery on the knee, having dealt with nothing more than tendinitis in it a few years ago but recovering with rest and treatment.

Whether Avila has surgery -- and the nature of it -- will have an impact on his recovery. As of Saturday, Avila said his goal was to be back for the second half of the season without any more pain in the knee, which has been bothering him for a few weeks and had become increasingly difficult to play through.

Dr. Anderson is a former Tigers team physician who currently serves as a team physician for the Detroit Lions.
