No final decision has been made on surgery, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Avila has never had surgery on the knee, having dealt with nothing more than tendinitis in it a few years ago but recovering with rest and treatment.

As of Saturday, Avila said his goal was to be back for the second half of the season without any more pain in the knee, which has been bothering him for a few weeks and had become increasingly difficult to play through.
