Lovullo's son weighing options with Red Sox
Holy Cross product drafted by Boston in 34th round
BALTIMORE -- Boston bench coach Torey Lovullo beamed with pride Thursday when talking about his son, Nick, who was picked by the Red Sox in the 34th round of the Draft.
Nick Lovullo, who is currently playing for the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod League, just finished his junior year at Holy Cross where he led the team with a .410 on-base percentage. Torey Lovullo was unaware Boston was going to take him, so it was a pleasant surprise when his son's name was called.
Now, they must decide whether to sign or have Nick head back for a final season at Holy Cross. Torey Lovullo has been able to catch many of Nick's game because the college is located in nearby Worcester, Mass.
"I think it was a good moment for him and everybody associated with him," said Torey Lovullo, who was originally selected by the Tigers in the fifth round of the 1987 Draft. "He's excited about it. He's playing in the Cape right now, so I have not had the chance to see him, but I will this weekend to talk about the situation and figure out the best course for him."

Nick Lovullo, a shortstop, batted .278 with three home runs and 22 RBIs, earning first-team All-Patriot League honors. He had a knack for getting on base, earning a team-high 31 walks. Torey Lovullo said his son worked hard to earn that success.
"His whole upbringing, I've treated him just like a normal child and separated baseball as a father and son," Torey Lovullo said. "This was his own thing. I really was removed from the whole process. I really just wanted it to be something he could do on his own and something he could be proud of."

Nick Lovullo was also drafted out of high school in the 38th round of the 2012 Draft by the Blue Jays, for whom Torey Lovullo was the first-base coach at the time. Nick Lovullo, however, decided to attend a university which is ranked among the best in the country. Now, he is faced with another tough decision.
"He's trying to figure out what to do, and what direction he wants to go," Torey Lovullo said. "Right now, he is working through the excitement of it. He's at a great university in Holy Cross, and he's going to weigh some of the options and make the best decision he can make. He's got a great head on his shoulders."
