Gibbons loses challenge on safe call at first
Play stands after O's Lombardozzi reaches on high throw from Hutchison
BALTIMORE -- Toronto manager John Gibbons challenged a call in the bottom of the fourth inning of the Blue Jays' 2-1, 12-inning loss to the Orioles on Saturday but came up empty for the fourth straight time this season.
Baltimore second baseman Steve Lombardozzi dropped a bunt to the third-base side of the mound, and Blue Jays starter Drew Hutchison got over to field it and made a high throw to first that pulled Edwin Encarnacion slightly off the bag. Lombardozzi arrived at the bag at about the same time, and he was called safe.
Gibbons came out and challenged the ruling. After a review of two minutes, 38 seconds, umpires ruled that the play would stand as called. That meant there wasn't conclusive evidence to overturn the call.
After the game, Gibbons said they felt the first baseman's foot remained on the bag and that's why he challenged it.
"That's what we saw in here," Gibbons said.
The Blue Jays' skipper is 0-for-4 so far in the regular season with challenges. Toronto also was 0-for-3 in Spring Training.
