Hicks held out with back stiffness

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins outfielder Aaron Hicks, who was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup with back stiffness, was held out for a second straight game against the Indians on Sunday.

Hicks was originally in the lineup on Saturday, but told manager Ron Gardenhire before the game that his back was stiff and he couldn't play. Jordan Schafer started in center field in Hicks' absence on Saturday and Sunday.

"He went to the trainers and told him his back was stiff and they tried to get him loose," Gardenhire said. "He said his back was stiff and he couldn't go."

Gardenhire said he had no update on Hicks before Sunday's game, as Hicks hadn't arrived to the park yet. Hicks didn't get to the clubhouse until roughly two hours before first pitch, which didn't seem to sit well with Gardenhire.

"The trainers came in and asked me if I had seen him," Gardenhire said. "I couldn't play him if I wanted to because I don't know if he's healthy."
