Perkins, Mastroianni ready for spring after surgeries
Twins announce duo will be ready to return after successful offseason operations
MINNEAPOLIS -- Closer Glen Perkins and outfielder Darin Mastroianni both underwent successful offseason surgeries, and will be ready for Spring Training, the Twins announced Tuesday.
The Twins also announced that outfielder Wilkin Ramirez, who ended the season on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured left tibia, was outrighted off the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Rochester.
Perkins, who was able to avoid the disabled list in 2013, underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair the medial meniscus in his right knee on Oct. 1.
The left-hander posted a 2.30 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings last season, going 36-for-40 in save opportunities.
Mastroianni had surgery Wednesday on his left ankle to remove the fixation hardware that was put in place during his previous ankle surgery on May 5. Mastroianni had a bone chip repaired in his left ankle in the May operation.
The 28-year-old outfielder played in just 30 games in 2013, hitting .185 with two doubles, five RBIs and two stolen bases.
Ramirez, meanwhile, fractured his left tibia on a foul tip on Aug. 29 and missed the rest of the season. The 27-year-old outfielder hit .272 with six doubles and six RBIs in 35 games.
