Van Gansen gives Northwest League All-Star win

Middlebrooks has walk-off single for Triple-A El Paso

Tri-City shortstop Peter Van Gansen singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning on Tuesday night to give the Northwest League a 6-5 victory over the Pioneer League in the Short-Season Class A All-Star Game.

Van Gansen, 21, the Padres 12th-round pick last June out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, was 1-for-2 in the game with two walks. Van Gansen is hitting .313 with two homers and 18 RBIs for the Dust Devils, who have the best overall record (26-19) in the Northwest League.

Tri-City right fielder Jose Carlos Urena was 0-for-2 as a starter for the Northwest League. Left-handed reliever Elvin Liriano had a strikeout in 1 1/3 perfect innings.

Elsewhere in the Padres' system, right-handed starter Michael Kelly was promoted from Fort Wayne to Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore, while right-handed starter Ernesto Montes was sent to Fort Wayne from Lake Elsinore.

Triple-A El Paso (57-53): CHIHUAHUAS 4, Reno 3 (11 innings). 3B Will Middlebrooks (.326) was 1-for-5 with a walk-off single. CF Travis Jankowski (.458) was 1-for-4 with a walk. SS Diego Goris was 2-for-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored in his first game since being promoted to the Chihuahuas. LF Alex Dickerson (.307) hit his 10th homer in five at-bats Starting RHP Daniel McCutchen (4.36 ERA) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings. RHP Michael Dimock (0.00) struck out three in two perfect innings. RHP Jay Jackson (1.78) allowed a run on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings to suffer a blown save. RHP Nick Vincent (4-3, 3.86) struck out two in a perfect inning to get the win.

Double-A San Antonio (47-62): Corpus Christi 10, MISSIONS 4. 1B Luis Domoromo (.254) was 2-for-4 with a triple, a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. CF Alberth Martinez (.276) had two doubles in three at-bats with a walk and a RBI. Starting RHP Dennis O'Grady (3-4, 5.60 ERA) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits and three walks with a strikeout in 4 2/3 innings. RHP Stephen Kohlscheen (3.06) allowed a run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore (39-69): INLAND EMPIRE 6, Storm 5 (14 innings). CF Donavan Tate (.214) and SS Chase Jensen (.292) each homered off rehabbing Angels starter Jered Weaver. 2B Fernando Perez (.237) was 2-for-6 with an RBI as the only Storm hitter with two hits. Starting LHP Brad Wieck (5.73 ERA) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks with five strikeouts in four innings. LHP Griffin Russell suffered the loss in his debut with the Storm, allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Class A Fort Wayne (55-51): TinCaps 4, BURLINGTON 0. RHP Chris Huffman (6-6, 3.28 ERA) allowed four hits with two strikeouts over five innings. RHP T.J. Weir (3.77) allowed a hit with three strikeouts over two innings. RHP Colby Blueberg (0.82) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in two innings to complete the shutout. Eighteen-year-old 2B Luis Urias (.379) was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a steal for two runs scored.

Class A Tri-City (26-19): The Dust Devils were off for the All-Star break.

Arizona Rookie League Padres (16-19): PADRES 8, Cubs 6. 1B Brad Zunica (.290) had two homers in three at-bats with two walks, four RBIs and three runs scored. LF Yale Rosen (.290) hit his third homer in four at-bats. Starting RHP Manuel Gonzalez (8.10 ERA) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in an inning. LHP Nathan Foriest (2-0, 1.26 ERA) had a strikeout in two perfect innings to get the win.

Dominican Summer League Padres (25-31): Padres 7, WHITE SOX 5. CF Carlos Taveras (.165) was 2-for-5 with a triple, his 10th steal, three RBIs and a run scored. DH Leudy Molina (.238) was 2-for-5 with his first homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Starting RHP Emmanuel Clase (2.34 ERA) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. RHP Juan Arias (2.67) gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth to record his fourth save.
