White Sox recall RHP Andre Rienzo from Class AAA Charlotte; Option OF Blake Tekotte to Charlotte

CLEVELAND - Prior to tonight's game at Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Andre Rienzo from Class AAA Charlotte and optioned outfielder Blake Tekotte to Charlotte.

Rienzo, 25, is scheduled to make his major-league debut tonight at Progressive Field in place of right-hander Jake Peavy, who was scratched from his scheduled start and pushed back to tomorrow night.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder is 8-6 with a 4.06 ERA (51 ER/113.0 IP), three complete games, one shutout and 113 strikeouts over 20 starts with Charlotte. Rienzo has gone 3-2 with a 1.47 ERA (7 ER/43.0 IP) and 42 strikeouts in his last six starts (five quality starts). He played for the World Team at the 2013 All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field (1.0 scoreless IP).

Rienzo leads the International League in strikeouts, is tied for the league lead in complete games and is tied for second in strikeouts-per-9.0 IP (9.00).

The right-hander threw a no hitter (7.0 IP) on July 25 vs. Indianapolis and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts.

Rienzo, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, would become the second Brazilian, and first pitcher, to play in the major leagues. Cleveland's Yan Gomes was the first native of Brazil to appear in a major-league game in 2012 with Toronto. Rienzo played for Team Brazil in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

He entered the season rated by Baseball America as the No. 7 Prospect in the White Sox organization. Rienzo, who will wear uniform No. 64, was originally signed by Chicago as a free agent on November 17, 2011.

Rienzo is 37-26 with a 3.46 ERA (209 ER/543.2 IP), seven complete games, four shutouts and 584 strikeouts in 111 games (97 starts) over seven seasons in the White Sox minor-league system.

Tekotte, 26, has appeared in 16 games (five starts) with the White Sox this season, going 5-20 (.250) with three runs scored.
