Wieters continuing to throw before visit to Dr. Andrews

BALTIMORE -- A day after revealing he's set to meet with Dr. James Andrews next week, Matt Wieters stopped by the Orioles' clubhouse and discussed his decision to meet with the noted orthopedic surgeon.

"The elbow just wasn't quite discomfort-free," Wieters said. "It was something where we were hoping it would be a little further along at this point, and at this point in the year we want to make sure that we get the best eyes on it and be able to have him look at it and be able to make a decision when he sees it."

Wieters, on the 15-day disabled list, will head down to Gulf Breeze, Fla., on Monday to get another opinion from Andrews as he aims to return from a right elbow strain that has kept him out since May 11.

Until then, Wieters is sticking with his plan of throwing every other day unless he's told otherwise.

"Because if he says, 'Keep going with it,'" Wieters said, "we want to be right back on schedule."

Like manager Buck Showalter a day earlier, Wieters also didn't rule out the potential of surgery, and the All-Star said a decision could come as soon as Monday. If Andrew recommends surgery, then Wieters would want to move quickly on it.

"If we do decide that that's the route to go," Wieters said, "then the quicker the better, obviously."

Wieters also echoed Showalter on the July 1 date that had been suggested for a potential return. While not set in stone, it's a date by which Wieters and the O's would have to seriously consider season-ending surgery for the switch-hitting catcher.

At that point, if Wieters hasn't progressed to the point where he could return in 2014, the Orioles would move ahead with the plan for surgery.

"If it's not looking promising for this year, we just want to make sure we do everything we can to have a full year next year, if it comes to that," Wieters said.
