Peralta's recovery slower than expected

Righty sidelined by oblique strain; Davis ahead of schedule

DENVER -- Wily Peralta's strained left oblique is improving, but Brewers manager Craig Counsell said on Saturday the right-hander is still a little behind schedule.

Milwaukee sent Peralta to the 15-day disabled list on May 25 -- retroactive to May 23 -- and he originally was given a recovery timetable of four to six weeks.

"We put a time frame on this at the start, but they're guesses," Counsell said. "You've got to go by how the guy is feeling.

"He's extending the playing catch to a little longer distances, but he's probably a little behind, I think. He's not on a mound yet, so I think we're a little ways away."

That could change soon.

"Maybe late next week we'll get him on a mound," Counsell said. "You've just got to go through the steps, and he's got to pass all those steps. Then we'll get him on a regular thing."

Worth noting

• The progress of Khris Davis, who underwent successful surgery June 2 to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee, has encouraged Counsell -- enough to say that the outfielder is slightly ahead of schedule. Like Peralta, Davis' initial rehab time was four to six weeks.

"Khris Davis is going to swing in the next couple days," Counsell said. "That's how he hurt it, so that's kind of the last thing to do. But he's doing great. He's probably gone faster than we thought. He's still a little bit of a ways away, but it's going faster than we thought."
