With homer, triple, Paredes not slowing down

NEW YORK -- There's a reason his teammates have jokingly referred to Jimmy Paredes as Babe Ruth this season: He has shown no signs of slowing down.

Paredes turned in another great offensive showing on Saturday, going 3-for-5 with a homer, a triple and two runs scored in Baltimore's 6-2 win over the Yankees.

"Jimmy is one of those guy that has been on both sides of the fence. … He wants to stay in the lineup," manager Buck Showalter said of Paredes, who is hitting .347 in 17 games this season. "Every time you think he might kind of be cooling off a little bit, he reminds you. He wants to stay in this lineup, and he's doing what it takes. He doesn't want to go back to all the things he's been through, waiver wires and what-have-you. He wants to make sure he's found a home."

Paredes, slotted in at designated hitter, got things going against New York with a two-out solo shot in the third inning off Yanks starter Chase Whitley. He also tripled and scored in the seventh inning and had a single in the ninth.

"We are swinging the bats well at the top of the order; obviously, Jimmy had about 17 hits again today," first baseman Chris Davis said. "It's good to see him continue to stay hot, and I think it's good for us to get a lead early and take a little pressure off our bullpen."

Paredes has at least one hit in 15 of 17 games this season and 12 of his 25 hits have been for extra bases.

"People talk about exit [velocities] ... your ears tell you what exit velo is when guys hit up here," Showalter said. "And Jimmy is making some loud noises."
