• The Phillies have struggled offensively recently, but they have been terrible since the beginning of the season against left-handers. They entered Tuesday hitting .136 with a .186 on-base percentage against lefties. To put that into perspective, big league pitchers hit a combined .129 with a .162 on-base percentage against lefties last season.

"I've been concerned about that for a few years now," Manuel said. It isn't just the left-handed hitters, either.

Their right-handed hitters haven't had much success against them.

"Our right-handed hitters don't knock them out," Manuel said.

• Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins wore two pairs of spikes during Monday's game against the Reds to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. He is taking one shoe from each pair and auctioning them off at MLB.com, where proceeds will go to the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

• Chase Utley hit a game-tying, pinch-hit home run Monday, the Phillies' second pinch-hit homer in as many games (Laynce Nix hit a go-ahead one Sunday in Miami). It is the first time the Phillies hit pinch-hit homers in back-to-back games since June 28-29, 2004, when Utley and Tomas Perez did it. The last time the Phillies hit a game-tying or go-ahead pinch-hit homer in consecutive games was Sept. 11-12, 1974, when Bill Robinson and Del Unser did it.
