Worth noting

• With his 10 strikeouts in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Royals, James Paxton became the fourth Mariners starter in franchise history to record 10-plus punchouts in one of his first four starts. The other three are Byron McLaughlin (1978), Erik Hanson (1988) and Felix Hernandez (2005). Only 10 Mariners pitchers have recorded 10-plus strikeouts in any game during their rookie season.

Paxton also became the first Mariners starter to begin his career with a 3-0 record since Freddy Garcia in 1999.

• Paxton was in rare company in setting down the Royals 10 times in a game. The only other pitchers with double-digit Ks against Kansas City this season have been Max Scherzer and Ubaldo Jimenez.

• Tuesday's shutout win was the 13th of the season for the Mariners, tying for the third-most in franchise history. The club record of 15 was set in 2003.
