Worth noting

• Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez threw live batting practice to Chase Utley, Cody Asche and Freddy Galvis. He was wild at times, but Sandberg said he got some good feedback from hitters. "It was his first time doing that, and it's something he can learn from and build on," he said. "Some of the hitters mentioned he was down in the zone pretty good and had some action on his changeup."

• Sandberg has been asked plenty already about his 25-man roster, but he repeated Tuesday there is an open competition for jobs on the bench and bullpen.

• The bench could be influenced by the Phillies' desire to have a player on the bench that can play center field. Sandberg mentioned Marlon Byrd and Domonic Brown can play center in a pinch, which would help Darin Ruf's chances to make the team.

• Sandberg said he ideally sees Jimmy Rollins hitting second this season.
