• The A's and Twins joined fans to "Stand Up To Cancer" on Monday. Placards were distributed to fans as they entered Target Field, and they were encouraged to personalize their placard with the name of someone they know who has been affected by cancer and hold it up at the end of the second inning.

Melvin wrote down the name of his late sister-in-law, Tanya Robertson Novarese, who passed away in 2008 after a battle with cervical cancer.

"That was special to be able to do that," said Melvin. "I let my wife know I was doing that."

• Outfielder Craig Gentry (back) will make two more rehab starts with Triple-A Sacramento this week before being activated off the disabled list. The plan is for him to join the A's in Seattle on Friday.

Either Fuld or Daric Barton is expected to be the odd man out upon Gentry's return.
