Worth noting

• D-backs catcher Miguel Montero was out of the lineup Thursday after playing 12 innings Wednesday night.

"I thought Miggy was gassed last night late in the game," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "The kid gave everything he had. Changed his shirt virtually every inning."

• Third baseman Eric Chavez last started a game May 11, when he served as the designated hitter against the White Sox, and he has not started at third base since May 7.

"His knee has been acting up, and he's on the way back now," Gibson said. "We haven't played him at third for a little bit. He can play third if we get into a situation in the middle of the game. Probably not going to start him right now."

Gibson said he believes Chavez will be able to start a game in the next week.

• While he would eventually like to get back in the starting rotation, right-hander Trevor Cahill has enjoyed pitching out of the bullpen.

"It's good," he said. "It's different. It's fun knowing you might play every day, I guess. You can contribute and help the team in some way every night instead of just every five days. You're always on your toes and I think that makes the games a little more exciting knowing that you're kind of watching it more closely, seeing which way it's going and can kind of tell if you have a decent chance to pitch."
