Worth noting

Mike Trout started as the designated hitter on Tuesday instead of his usual center-field position. It was Trout's fourth start of the season as DH and first since June 5, when he was nursing a back injury.

Scioscia said it was "just a recharge day" for Trout. In Trout's place, Josh Hamilton moved to center and Collin Cowgill got the nod in left.

"I think Josh is really comfortable in center field when he gets an opportunity to play it," Scioscia said. "I think we have to keep him connected there at some point to if we want to tap into that if we want to give Mike a day off."

• Scioscia confirmed that Matt Shoemaker would not make Thursday's start at Texas, as was planned before Monday's game.

Shoemaker entered the series opener against the Jays in the third inning after Jered Weaver left with lower back tightness. Shoemaker, on three days' rest, threw 3 2/3 innings and 61 pitches to earn the win.

Scioscia said the Angels were looking at Hector Santiago to start Thursday if he does not have to provide length during Tuesday's game.

David Freese, who did not start two of the previous three games with a sore shin, was not in the lineup Tuesday. Scioscia said Freese is healthy and he wanted to give him the night off with a day game Wednesday.
