Worth noting

• Bochy relayed the news on Thursday that center fielder Angel Pagan has begun testing his ailing back by taking "soft toss" batting practice in Arizona as part of his recovery regimen. "Reports said he was feeling good, so that's encouraging," the skipper said.

• Bochy seemed to choose his words carefully when asked why right-handed-batting Marco Scutaro wasn't in Thursday's lineup against Philadelphia left-hander Cole Hamels. Bochy indicated that Scutaro, who has started twice since being activated from the disabled list on July 12, is still easing his way into playing shape after enduring back problems.

"Hopefully, he'll get to the point where we're more comfortable using him a couple of days a week," said Bochy, adding that Scutaro might start one of the three weekend games against the Dodgers.

• Bochy said that despite still feeling the effects of the concussion he sustained last Saturday, first baseman Brandon Belt was expected to be able to return to San Francisco on the team's chartered flight.
