Worth noting

• The Angels outrighted right-hander Caleb Clay on Wednesday, removing him from the club's 40-man roster.

The move drops the Angels' 40-man roster to 39 players, freeing up a spot that could potentially be used on an emergency starter, should the club have a need for one. Wade LeBlanc, Randy Wolf and Chris Volstad are possible spot starters, but none of them are on the current 40-man roster.

Clay was recalled on Sunday to add length to a tired bullpen and was optioned Tuesday before making his Major League debut.

• Amid the Angels' current offensive slump, David Freese has quietly put together a nine-game hit streak.

In his last 41 at-bats entering Wednesday's finale vs. the Phillies, Freese was hitting .366 and had 22 RBIs in his previous 37 games.

"I think there's still more in David," Scioscia said. "Hopefully, he's going to be a guy that contributes when he can this last six, seven weeks of the season because he's important to us."
