Yanks recall Mitchell, send Ramirez to Triple-A

KANSAS CITY -- The Yankees recalled right-hander Bryan Mitchell from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, optioning right-hander Jose Ramirez to Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.

Mitchell, 24, is with the Yankees for the first time this season. He has made seven starts for the RailRiders, going 2-3 with a 4.26 ERA. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that they could use him if length is needed out of the bullpen.

"He's a young man that's got good stuff and is trying to become more consistent," Girardi said. "When he becomes consistent, he'll become a guy that's probably knocking on the door here. That's our goal for him. Obviously, he's kind of the next man up if another starter went down, but we just felt we needed some distance."

Ramirez made his season debut in relief on Friday, pitching one inning in the Yankees' 12-1 loss to the Royals. Ramirez permitted four earned runs and three hits, with two walks and a wild pitch.

The Yankees will have to make another roster move before Sunday's game, as left-hander Chris Capuano will be activated from his Minor League rehab assignment to start the series finale against Kansas City.
