Yanks to evaluate Joba before activating him

NEW YORK -- The Yankees are considering activating right-hander Joba Chamberlain after the reliever turned in a successful one-inning outing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Chamberlain started on Tuesday for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Toledo and pitched a scoreless frame around two hits, throwing nine of his 12 pitches for strikes.

Chamberlain -- on the disabled list, retroactive to April 28 -- is working his way back from a right oblique strain, and manager Joe Girardi said he wanted to consult with general manager Brian Cashman about activating Chamberlain.

"I want to talk to him and talk to Cash and see, 'Does he need another one? Is he OK?'" Girardi said. "I just want to see how he feels first."
