After challenge, Escobar safe on bunt

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals benefited from an overturned call in the third inning of Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Friday, successfully challenging a call at first base on a bunt attempt by Alcides Escobar.

The Royals would go on to win, 5-4, evening the series at 1-1 as it moves to Houston for today's Game 3 at 4 p.m. ET on MLB Network.

After Alex Rios led off the inning with a double to right field off Astros left-hander Scott Kazmir, Escobar dropped down a bunt that was fielded by first baseman Chris Carter. Carter flipped the ball to second baseman Jose Altuve covering first base, and Escobar was initially ruled out by first-base umpire Mike Everitt.

Manager Ned Yost, however, quickly challenged the call, and it was ultimately overturned, putting runners at first and third with nobody out. Ben Zobrist followed with a sharp grounder to third baseman Luis Valbuena, who was able to turn a 5-4-3 double play, but Rios scored from third. Lorenzo Cain flied out to right to end the inning.
