Yunel hit on hand with pitch; X-rays negative

Nationals third baseman has some swelling and is considered day to day

WASHINGTON -- Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar exited Thursday's 4-2 win against the Padres because of a right hand contusion. X-rays were negative.

"He has some swelling. He is day to day. We'll see how he is," manager Matt Williams said.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Escobar was hit on the right hand by a pitch thrown by right-hander Andrew Cashner. Jayson Werth scored on the play to get the Nationals on the board. It marked the eighth time this season Escobar was hit by a pitch, which leads the team.

Escobar was on the ground for about a minute as Williams and assistant athletic trainer Steve Gober came to his aid. Escobar walked to first and left the game after the half-inning ended with the Nats leading, 2-1. He was replaced by Danny Espinosa, who played second base with Anthony Rendon shifting to third.
