58 runs over 3 games?! Cubs' High-A affiliate delivers historic feat

No Major League team has scored more than 56 runs over a three-game span since at least 1900.

Over the past three days, High-A South Bend has plated a whopping 58.

After putting up 25 runs on Thursday and nine on Friday, the Cubs affiliate built on its offensive outburst with a 24-4 rout of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday at Neuroscience Group Field. The contest gave South Bend 58 runs over its previous three games, topping the 1950 Red Sox, who hold the big league record for the most runs over a three-game period since at least 1900 (56). Not only that, but South Bend managed to cross home plate 24 times without hitting a single home run.

In total, the lineup racked up 24 knocks in Saturday's contest. Three players tallied four-hit performances, and two had three-hit nights. Every batter recorded at least one hit.

Boston won 94 games in 1950. The roster featured the likes of Johnny Pesky -- the foul pole’s namesake -- Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr and of course, the Splendid Splinter, Ted Williams.

For South Bend, the lineup is led by 5-foot-8 outfielder Kane Kepley. The Cubs’ No. 6 prospect has served as the perfect table setter during the club’s hot streak, supplying 11 hits, 10 runs, eight RBIs and four steals from the leadoff spot.

Kepley, a 2025 second-rounder, has a penchant for getting on base and taking off once he does. He grounded out to start Saturday's contest but was right back in the mix in the second frame. With the bases loaded and two runs already across, the 22-year-old knocked an RBI single through the right side off rehabbing Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester. He scored on a single by Cubs No. 26 prospect Kade Snell later in the frame.

Kepley finished the contest with four singles, a walk and five RBIs, bringing his season slash line to .313/.494/.443. His 36 walks, 23 stolen bases and .494 OBP all pace Chicago’s system.

In addition to Kepley, infielders Leonel Espinoza and Matt Halbach have helped fuel the Cubs’ gaudy run totals. Espinoza had seven hits, six RBIs and a homer over the three contests, while Halbach recorded five hits, five runs, a homer, six RBIs and two walks in his lone appearance during the streak.

Unlike the Red Sox, who went 2-1 during their run-scoring eruption, the High-A Cubs are riding a three-game win streak entering Sunday. If they score eight runs in that contest, they’ll also surpass Boston’s 1950 squad for the most runs over a four-game period.
