ST. PETERSBURG -- Tampa Bay continued to deal on Wednesday. Following its 3-2 win over the Yankees at Tropicana Field, the Rays sent right-hander Matt Andriese to the D-backs. In return, they acquired right-hander Brian Shaffer and catcher Michael Perez, both Minor Leaguers. Shaffer was Arizona's No. 23 prospect, per MLB Pipeline.
Perez will be selected to Tampa Bay's Major League roster and will join the team Thursday in Baltimore, and Adam Moore will be designated for assignment.
"I knew it was a possibility, but I didn't really see it coming today," said Andriese during a phone interview. "It is kind of shocking. But we're always prepared for that situation. I guess you never can really see it coming until it actually happens, that's just part of baseball."
Andriese, who has shifted into a long-relief role, is 3-4 with a 4.07 ERA across 59 2/3 innings over 27 outings, including four starts. Over his four-year career, he is 19-22 with a 4.30 ERA over 99 games, including 48 starts. Andriese will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason, and he will not hit free agency until after the 2021 season.
Andriese expressed excitement to be joining the D-backs.
"Go to a first-place team, playoff push, and hopefully establish a good role there," Andriese said. "I'm grateful for everything [the Rays] have done for me and the opportunities they gave me. I feel as though my time with the team made me a better baseball player and a better pitcher.
"Definitely learned from a lot of different circumstances, in terms of starting and relieving. It's made me a more well-rounded pitcher. I have nothing but good things to say about the organization."
The trade marked Tampa Bay's second prominent trade in the span of hours, as it dealt starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to Boston earlier in the afternoon for Minor League left-hander Jalen Beeks.
Shaffer, 21, is 7-5 with a 2.70 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 19 starts for Class A Kane County this year, his second professional season. Scouting reports suggest that he has low- to-mid-90s fastball velocity, but that it offers sink that could play at the next level.
Over parts of two Minor League seasons, Shaffer -- a sixth-round pick by Arizona in 2017 out of the University of Maryland -- is 7-5 with a 2.82 ERA 32 outings, including 29 starts.
Pérez, 25, has been touted for his defensive prowess and his ability to hit right-handed pitching. He's thrown out 34.8 percent of basestealers this year, and is batting 284/.342/.417 with nine doubles, six homers and 29 RBIs in 58 games for Triple-A Reno. A fifth-round selection by the D-backs in 2011, Perez is a career .246/.321/.396 hitter over 572 games across eight Minor League seasons.
