BOSTON -- Injuries continue to nag , who exited the Rays' 9-2 win in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Red Sox because of a right wrist contusion. X-rays were negative.

Red Sox starter hit Pham with a 90.1-mph two-seam fastball in the second inning. Pham stayed in the game, but he was removed for the third inning. shifted from right field to fill Pham’s place in left and took Pham's No. 2 spot in the lineup, playing right field.

Pham was not in the starting lineup for Game 2 of the doubleheader.

Manager Kevin Cash was glad the results of the X-rays came back negative for Pham, who is batting .288 and ranks second on the Rays with 61 hits.

“Pretty relieving,” Cash said. “He’s such a big part of our lineup. We don’t need another blow like that right now.”

Pham had just returned from a right calf injury on Thursday. He played at designated hitter in his first two games back and was moved to left field on Saturday. Cash encouraged Pham, who has stolen six bases in 56 games this season, to not try to do too much too soon.

“You just keep your fingers crossed that Tommy can be smart and manage himself, because he wants to get after it,” Cash said before Saturday’s doubleheader.

“Yesterday, I know he got on base and he’s looking at me like he wants to steal. That’s probably not the smartest thing to do right now. Manage his effort level. We ask all our guys to play hard, run hard, all of that. But we’re sensitive to [Avisaíl García] and Tommy right now because we need him in the lineup as much as possible.”
