J.D., Benny, Mookie homers erased by rainout

Sox race out to 5-0 lead behind Price before postponement

July 26th, 2018

BALTIMORE -- J.D. Martinez increased his Major League lead with home run No. 32 on Wednesday, but Mother Nature had other ideas.
After a lengthy rain delay eight outs into the Red Sox-Orioles matchup at Oriole Park, the game was called, taking away Martinez's homer as well as long balls by and and 's 5-0 lead in the second inning.
All the stats are gone, and the game has been rescheduled to 1:05 p.m. ET on Aug. 11 as part of a split doubleheader at Oriole Park. The second game will begin as scheduled at 7:05 p.m. ET.
Martinez still leads MLB in homers, but his total rolls back to 31. Betts' home run would have been his 25th on the season and his 14th in 36 career games at Camden Yards. Benintendi lost home run No. 15.

"I feel for the team. I don't care about the home runs," manager Alex Cora said. "We had a 5-0 lead and we have one of our horses on the mound. It's not that it's a guaranteed win, but we know where we are at and every game matters."
Cora and Price were not pleased with Wednesday's postponement, and Cora spoke to the frustration regarding the handling of the rain over the course of the series, as two games were delayed before the middle of the second inning and the finale was allowed to start despite all signs pointing to unplayable weather.
"It happened two days ago -- a rain delay with two outs in the first inning -- and it happened again tonight," Cora said. "I'm not happy about it.
"Honestly, it was tough. Rick [Porcello] had to wait for a while in a game with two outs in the first inning, and it was a rain delay. We'll turn the page and show up tomorrow and do what we do."
Price did not answer questions, telling reporters in a huff to "tweet about it" instead. Cora and his staff have yet to decide the next start for Price, who only threw 11 pitches.
For now the four-game series against the Twins at Fenway Park will be started by, in order, , Chris Sale, Porcello and newly acquired .
