Rockies Stat of the Day: August 2021

September 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Rockies this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

Aug. 31: Rangers 4, Rockies 3 -- Relievers on the upswing
The up-and-down campaigns of righty relievers Yency Almonte and Tyler Kinley -- who had strong 2020 seasons and came in with high expectations -- are on a late-season upswing. Almonte pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and has a 1.93 ERA in his last 11 appearances. Kinley added a scoreless, two-strikeout inning, and he has given up just one run in his last nine appearances, covering 9 2/3 innings.

Aug. 30: Rangers 4, Rockies 3 -- Márquez hits a snag
Rockies All-Star starter Germán Márquez tied a career high by giving up three home runs against the Rangers to add to a frustrating streak. He has given up three homers in a game five times, but twice in his last three starts. He also is 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA over his last four starts -- although his team is 2-2.

Aug. 29: Rockies 5, Dodgers 0 -- Cron's sizzling August
C.J. Cron started August hot, and he's finishing the month hot. With Cron's three-run homer in the first inning in the series finale against the Dodgers, he now has 33 RBIs in the month of August, marking the most RBIs in a single month this season in MLB. The last Rockie to have at least 30 RBIs in a single month was David Dahl in June 2019, with 32.

Aug. 28: Dodgers 5, Rockies 2 -- Road winning woes
The Rockies were within reach of winning three consecutive road games for a second time this season, but their streak was snapped after a three-run eighth inning by the Dodgers. Colorado's lone three-game road win streak was against the Padres (July 10-11) and the Dodgers (July 23).

Aug. 27: Rockies 4, Dodgers 2 -- Chuck Nazty ties Tulo
With his two-run homer in the first inning, Charlie Blackmon tied Troy Tulowitzki for seventh on the Rockies' all-time home run list. Blackmon has launched 188 career homers, all in a Colorado uniform, and the latest flew off the bat at 106.3 mph, per Statcast.

Aug. 25: Cubs 5, Rockies 2 F/7 (G1); Rockies 11, Cubs 9 F/10 (G2) -- Joe's Wrigley memento
Connor Joe said he was excited about the Rockies' trip to Wrigley Field, and he created his own magic moment as he hit a grand slam in the series finale. That long ball was the first grand slam of the 29-year-old's career, and on that one swing alone, Joe tied his career-high for RBIs in a single game.

Aug. 23: Cubs 6, Rockies 4 -- Cron keeps slugging
C.J. Cron entered the series opener leading all qualified Major League hitters with an .825 slugging percentage in August, and he kept that ball moving. Cron picked up singles in the first and third innings before doubling to lead off the sixth, and he ended the night with his slugging percentage sitting at .836 this month. Overall in August, Cron has 14 singles, seven doubles and seven home runs in 67 at-bats.

Aug. 22: D-backs 8, Rockies 4 -- Five walks issued in one inning
In the sixth inning, the D-backs benefitted from five walks by three Rockies pitchers -- starter Jon Gray (two), lefty Lucas Gilbreath (two, one with the bases loaded) and righty Robert Stephenson (one, with the bases loaded). It was the first time the Rockies issued five walks in a frame since the ninth inning of a 14-13 loss to the Padres on June 16, 2019.

Aug. 21: Rockies 5, D-backs 2 -- Freeland matches K mark
Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland is on an underappreciated hot streak, only because the low run support he's received hasn't allowed him to fill the win column. In this win, Freeland matched a career high with 10 strikeouts while holding the D-backs to two runs on six hits and one walk over seven innings. However, he left with Colorado trailing, 2-0. It was the 13th time in 16 starts this year that he has received less than four runs of support and the fifth time he received none.

Aug. 20: Rockies 9, D-backs 4 -- Rox hitters vs. no-no hurlers
The Rockies faced D-backs left-hander Tyler Gilbert, who had thrown a no-hitter against the Padres in his previous outing (the first start of his MLB career). Colorado tagged him for four runs and nine hits in five innings. Gilbert isn't alone. Reds left-hander Wade Miley no-hit Cleveland on May 7, then struggled against the Rox in his next start, giving up eight runs on 11 hits in three innings on May 14.

Aug. 18: Rockies 7, Padres 5 -- Cron at home
C.J. Cron -- slashing .415/.500/.887 with four doubles, seven home runs and 25 RBIs in August -- drove in three runs in the sweep-completing victory. In his last nine home games dating back to July 21, Cron has 22 RBIs -- the most over a nine-game home stretch by a Rockies player since Nolan Arenado drove in 24 from Sept. 7-Aug. 1, 2017.

Aug. 17: Rockies 7, Padres 3 -- Chasing Tulo
Charlie Blackmon's two-run, seventh-inning homer off the Padres' Tim Hill brought his career total to 187 -- one behind Troy Tulowtizki (2006-15) for seventh in club history.

Aug. 16: Rockies 6, Padres 5 -- Senzatela well-grounded
Right-hander Antonio Senzatela entered the game with a 51.9 percent ground-ball rate. He drove that higher by forcing 14 groundouts, three of which began double plays, while holding the Padres to two runs in seven innings of a no-decision. Senzatela entered the night seventh in the National League and ninth in the Majors in the category among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched. Senzatela fits with the Rockies' rotation, as Germán Márquez (52.2 percent) is fourth in the NL and ninth in the Majors, while Jon Gray (51.4 percent) is eighth in the NL and 10th in the Majors.

Aug. 15: Giants 5, Rockies 2 -- Bullpen makes strides
Not much good happens when a team goes 1-5 on a road trip. But an area of trouble for the Rockies -- the bullpen -- turned in solid work over six games. The team posted a 1.77 ERA over 20 1/3 bullpen innings. The finale was highlighted by Robert Stephenson entering with bases loaded and one out, and giving up just Wilmer Flores' one-run single.

Aug. 14: Rockies 4, Giants 1 -- Freeland's heart in San Francisco
Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland held the Giants to one run in six innings Saturday night, and he was finally rewarded at Oracle Park. In seven career starts in San Francisco, Freeland has a fine 2.72 ERA. However, the club had lost the previous four. Saturday was just his second win.

Aug. 13: Giants 5, Rockies 4 -- Home & away, night & day
The Rockies' home/away splits are on pace to have the largest differential in AL/NL history. Colorado is 38-21 (.644) at home -- third-best in the Majors -- and a Major League-worst 13-44 (.228) on the road after Friday night's loss to the Giants, resulting in a whopping .416 difference in winning percentage. The 1945 Philadelphia Athletics' .356 win-loss differential is the current full-season record.

Aug. 12: Giants 7, Rockies 0 -- Story a ball magnet
Not only has Rockies shortstop Trevor Story been hit with nine pitches this year, but six of those have occurred in the last 25 games. Scouts who have followed the Rockies noted this season that pitchers have been able to beat him with up-and-in pitches more often than in the past. But when such pitches miss, they hit him. The Giants' Logan Webb drilled Story on his left forearm in the fourth inning, and Story did not finish the game.

Aug. 11: Astros 5, Rockies 1 -- McMahon's streak
Ryan McMahon's 8-game hitting streak is now one game shy of his career high, which he's reached twice in his career -- once in 2019 and once earlier this season. McMahon has hit safely in 17 of his 20 games since the All-Star break.

Aug. 10: Astros 5, Rockies 0 -- Gray racks up the K's
Jon Gray's nine strikeouts vs. the Astros Tuesday were his second-highest total of the season. With the effort, Gray became just the 12th pitcher this season to strike out nine Astros in a start.

Aug. 8: Rockies 13, Marlins 8 -- Rockies tee off
Finishing off their sweep of the Marlins, the Rockies hit six home runs -- their most in a game since May 31, 2016, against the Reds. Their 11 homers in the series tied the club record for most in a three-game set -- this was Colorado's third such series. The last was Sept. 28-30, 2018, against the Nationals.

Aug 7: Rockies 7, Marlins 4 -- Joe gets it done
Rookie Connor Joe went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a career-high four RBIs Saturday night. In 13 games since being called up (for the third time this season), he is 15-for-41 (.366) with three home runs, three doubles and 13 RBIs.

Aug. 6: Rockies 14, Marlins 2 -- Highest scoring frame since 2016
The Rockies' nine-run bottom of the fourth against the Marlins was their biggest inning since they scored 13 runs in the top of the fifth against the Giants on May 5, 2016. Charlie Blackmon launched a two-run homer, C.J. Cron swatted a three-run shot -- his second homer of the game -- and Elias Díaz added a solo shot. The first two homers of the frame were off Sandy Alcantara, before Díaz greeted Steven Okert with his homer.

Aug. 5: Rockies 6, Cubs 5 -- They wear their sunglasses day and night
The funny little sunglasses that Rockies home run hitters get to wear in the dugout are getting quite a bit of use these days. Trevor Story (twice), Connor Joe and Sam Hilliard (the brains behind the shades) each went deep Thursday. Since the All-Star break, a Colorado team that had been challenged for power has homered 28 times in 18 games. While Coors Field enhances the offense, the Rox had two four-homer games and one with three round-trippers on their last road trip.

Aug. 4: Cubs 3, Rockies 2 -- Rodgers' bat has arrived
Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games by going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. He's hitting .348 (16-for-46) through this stretch. The three hits tied his career high, last set on May 22, 2019, at Pittsburgh.

Aug. 3: Rockies 13, Cubs 6 -- Díaz brings catcher power
Elias Díaz began this rout of the Cubs with a grand slam in the fourth inning, and in the process solidified the catching position as a spot of power for the Rockies. Díaz's 12 home runs (all but one coming since June 1) and Dom Nuñez's six bring the team's total to 18 from catchers this season. It's the most since 2016, when Nick Hundley, Tony Wolters, Dustin Garneau and Tom Murphy combined for 18.

Aug. 1: Padres 8, Rockies 1 -- Goudeau starts 1-for-1
Ashton Goudeau, who came into the game in relief, notched his first career hit in his first career at-bat. With the single, Goudeau became the first Rockies pitcher since 2019 (Pete Lambert) to record his first career hit during his first at-bat in the Majors.
