Butera back to Rockies on Minor League deal

March 25th, 2019

The Rockies have signed catcher and first baseman Drew Butera to a Minor League contract, the club announced Monday. Butera had signed a Minor League deal with the Phillies in February and had been in Spring Training with them until they released him on March 22.

A nine-year Major League veteran, Butera played 10 games for the Rockies in 2018 after the Royals traded him to Colorado in August.

The Rockies have two catchers on their active roster: Chris Iannetta and Tony Wolters.

Colorado had placed catcher Tom Murphy on waivers over the weekend, and the Giants claimed him Monday. He was out of Minor League options. Butera provides additional organizational depth at the position.
