Marlins-Rox PPD Tuesday; twin bill Wednesday

Feltner to remain with club, in line to start Sunday vs. Braves

June 1st, 2022

DENVER -- Tuesday night’s Rockies-Marlins game was postponed, with a traditional doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday. The Rockies will start Antonio Senzatela in the opener and Germán Márquez in the nightcap.

The Marlins’ starters will be left-hander Trevor Rogers and right-hander Edward Cabrera, but the order has not been determined. Cabrera is being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville. The first game starts at 1:10 p.m. MT, and the second will begin 45 minutes after the end of the first.

Righty , who earned his first Major League win with seven strong innings in Monday afternoon’s 7-1 victory over the Marlins, will not be optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque. Instead, he is in line to start Sunday against the Braves.

Speaking before Tuesday’s game was postponed, Rockies manager Bud Black did not make the official announcement but noted that Sunday would be Feltner’s next turn through the rotation.

Feltner had been recalled, for the second time this season, because Senzatela sustained a back injury on April 16. In two games since Senzatela’s injury, Feltner has a 2.25 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings. Black said Feltner has had little problem functioning as the Rockies’ sixth starter, which means most of his work has been done at Albuquerque.

“That’s part of the process of being a young player,” Black said. “Part of experiencing this.”

Last season, Feltner pitched at Class A Spokane and Double-A Hartford before being called up to the Majors for two starts (11.37 ERA). That meant he didn’t get to prepare for altitude at Albuquerque. But he was given one appearance there to end the year.

This year, Feltner has used his eight Triple-A starts (4-1, 3.76 ERA) to get a better idea of how his pitches may react in Denver. Monday was his first start at Coors Field, and he handled it well. The Marlins’ Jesús Sánchez hit the longest homer in the Majors this season (496 feet) in the second inning, but Feltner did not give up another run. His two-seam and four-seam fastballs, as well as his curveball and slider, did exactly what he wanted at home.

“A lot of it has to do with being comfortable at altitude, pitching at altitude and having that practice under my belt,” Feltner said. “That helped, as well as seeing better hitters consistently at Triple-A, finetuning my game plan.”

With the Rockies needing to keep Feltner on the roster, right-handed reliever Chad Smith, who debuted with a scoreless inning on Saturday against the Nationals, was optioned to Albuquerque. However, Smith is likely to remain with the club as the 27th man for Wednesday’s doubleheader.
