Rockies acquire LHP Jonathan Sanchez from Kansas City in exchange for RHP Jeremy Guthrie

The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie.

Sanchez, 29, has gone 1-6 with a 7.76 ERA (53.1 ip, 46 er) in 12 starts in his first year with the Royals this season. Sanchez is a veteran of seven Major League seasons with San Francisco (2006-11) and Kansas City (2012). The Mayaguez, Puerto Rico native owns a career record of 39-52 with a 4.50 ERA (761.1 ip, 381 er), 420 walks and 772 strikeouts in 186 career games/130 starts. From 2009-2011 with San Francisco, Sanchez went 25-28 with a 3.75 ERA (458.0 ip, 191 er), 250 walks and 484 strikeouts in 85 games/81 starts. Sanchez led the Major Leagues with his .204 opponent’s average in 2009.

Guthrie, 33, is 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA (90.2 ip, 64 er) in 19 games/15 starts in his first year with the Rockies this season. Guthrie has a career Major League record of 50-74 with a 4.37 ERA (1111.0 ip, 539 er), 335 walks and 671 strikeouts in 196 career appearances/169 starts With Cleveland (2004-06), Baltimore (2007-11) and Colorado (2012). The right-hander was the Rockies Opening Day starter after being acquired from Baltimore on February 6, 2012.
