Rockies part ways with director of research and development Van Lenten

Assistant general manager Rosenthal to take over in interim

March 9th, 2022

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Rockies have parted ways with Scott Van Lenten just months after hiring him as director of research and development.

The move was first reported by the Denver Post. The team confirmed Van Lenten’s departure on Wednesday, but declined to discuss the reasons for the move. The club said that assistant general manager Zack Rosenthal, under whom responsibilities for R&D fall, will run the department until a new director is found.

Van Lenten was hired last August as the Rockies attempted to rebuild a department that lost much of its personnel during the 2020 pandemic season. Before joining Colorado, Van Lenten had spent four seasons with the Nationals, as an analyst and then senior analyst in R&D. Van Lenten interned with the Orioles in '16.

The club has made multiple hires for its analytics team, and the crew has been working at Minor League camp since it opened.
