Story struck by grounder, avoids the worst

DENVER -- On an awful night for the Rockies, who squandered a six-run, ninth-inning lead in a 16-12, 12-inning loss to the Padres on Friday night, at least shortstop emerged with just a bruised forehead above his left eye.

In his case, it could’ve been worse.

Story was trying to backhand Hunter Renfroe’s bouncer in the eighth inning, but the ball deflected off Story’s wrist and hit him in the head. The play was ruled a single. After manager Bud Black and head athletic trainer Keith Dugger consulted with Story, the Rockies removed him from a game the Rockies were leading, 11-4, at Coors Field.

“It swelled up immediately, and Keith and I both felt that it was the right thing to do,” Black said of his decision. “But as far as a concussion or anything like that, negative. Keith came down to the dugout and said, ‘Trev is going to be OK.’”

Story went to the All-Star Game last year and was fourth at his position in this week’s update of the Google 2019 All-Star Ballot. Story went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. He is hitting .284 with 16 home runs and 46 RBIs.

By the night’s crazy end, Ian Desmond, who had a three-run, inside-the-park homer in the sixth inning, said he would go home considering Story’s health a positive.

“That ball came up and looked like it got him right in the eye,” Desmond said. “The fact we’re going to have him back tomorrow, or soon, is a huge victory. I came in from center field, and it looked like it was going to be bad.

“For him to be OK is huge for us. Take that as a victory and move on.”
