Twins-O's postponed Friday; DH on Saturday

Romero called up for doubleheader; Schoop returns to Baltimore

April 20th, 2019

BALTIMORE -- Twins manager Rocco Baldelli may get his first big league look at 24-year-old Dominican right-hander Fernando Romero, who will join Minnesota as the 26th man on the roster for Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader in Baltimore.

With rain pouring down by late afternoon, Friday’s scheduled series opener between the Orioles and Twins was postponed due to inclement weather. The teams will instead line up for a single-admission doubleheader Saturday at Oriole Park. The first game will begin at 4:05 p.m. ET, followed by the regularly scheduled game approximately 30 minutes after the first game concludes.

Romero will be in a different role, however, than when he made 11 starts for then-manager Paul Molitor last season.

Romero has come on in relief four times this year with Triple-A Rochester, retiring at least four batters in each outing and no more than 10 in any. And if he does work Saturday for a bullpen that logged 15 1/3 innings earlier this week while losing three of four against the Blue Jays, it will be in a similar capacity.

“He’s a guy that we think very highly of, and somebody that we’re going to be looking to, hopefully for a very long time,” Baldelli said. “We’ve talked about him pitching in some extended settings, but we’re not going to use him say as like, how you describe a traditional long man. He’s not going to go out there and in a certain situation throw five innings.”

Wednesday decision

Meanwhile, with rain pushing starter Jose Berrios back a day, the Twins will either need to make a roster move for a starter in Wednesday’s series finale against the Astros, or find a solution from their bullpen. Baldelli doesn’t have a lean yet.

“I think it’s way too early to say,” he said. “There are a ton of variables that we’re going to have to take a look at, but obviously it’s something that we’re going to have to spend our time thinking about.”

Bless the rain?

While Friday’s rain prolonged second baseman Jonathan Schoop’s return to the park where he spent parts of his first six major league seasons, it did allow him the opportunity for some reunions.

Schoop was an All-Star with Baltimore in 2017, but was traded the following year when the Orioles began an organizational overhaul.

“I’m nervous, but good nervous, to see the fans, to see the people I get to know along the way,” Schoop said. “Today the game’s cancelled. So I’m going to go see some fans and say hi with them. And then go sleep and be ready to go.”

Schoop didn’t expect the trade at the time. And Friday may provide the opportunity to say some of the goodbyes he didn’t have time for then.

He stopped short of calling the rainout a blessing in disguise.

“It’s good,” Schoop said. “But you want to play baseball.”

Fans holding tickets for the originally scheduled 7:05 p.m. game on Saturday, April 20, should use those tickets for both games of the doubleheader. Tickets for Friday’s postponed game will not be automatically honored, however; fans must exchange the value of their tickets from Friday’s game at the Oriole Park Box Office.
