July 17th, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS -- As expected, thinks that he avoided significant injury after his early exit from Tuesday night's loss to the Mets, a stroke of luck for a Twins squad that had just returned to nearly full strength with the activation of both and from the injured list.

Here's the latest on the final few lingering injuries around the Minnesota clubhouse:

• Schoop said on Wednesday morning that he still felt fine after he was removed from Tuesday's game after grabbing his left side following a foul ball off Mets closer Edwin Diaz in the ninth inning. He was officially diagnosed with a mild abdominal strain and is day to day.

will undergo testing at Target Field on Wednesday for the concussion-like symptoms that resulted in his placement on the 7-day injured list for concussion protocol on Tuesday. Because the IL assignment was backdated to Sunday, he could return to the field as soon as next Sunday if his health allows.

"What he does is, he brings something that nobody else brings," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "His game has personality. Every guy brings something a little different, and so does Buck. And it’s a very unique skillset; it’s a very unique energy. It’s making certain plays and doing certain things. He does those things and we talked about him all year long changing the game."

• Baldelli did not have any major updates regarding (right thumb dislocation) and (left oblique strain), who have not experienced any setbacks but are not facing an imminent return to the field.

"The general progress is positive, but I think both, in their own way, are going to still take some time," Baldelli said.

Buxton named winner of Twins Heart and Hustle Award

Buxton was named the Twins' recipient of the 2019 Heart and Hustle Award, as announced Tuesday morning by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. The award recognizes active players who demonstrate a passion for baseball and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game.

"You feel like he is out there for his teammates, he is out there for this group and he’s out there to win," Baldelli said. "That’s the reason he takes the field every day. He gives everything up for this team every day. I think he’s a perfect candidate, a perfect winner for this award and I’ll be very happy watching him accept it.”

It marked the second such honor for Buxton, who was also the Twins' Heart and Hustle Award winner in 2017.

“[Byron] plays the game with passion and carries himself in a way that makes me proud that he wears a Twins uniform,” said Twins special assistant to baseball operations Michael Cuddyer.

One preliminary winner from each of the 30 clubs is selected by committees of former players with connections to each team. The overall winner will be announced on Nov. 7, at the 20th annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York City.

Former Twins infielder Eduardo Escobar, who was the club's recipient of the award last season, was also voted as the 2019 winner for the D-backs.

Top prospect Larnach promoted to Double-A

Outfielder Trevor Larnach, Minnesota's No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline and No. 93 in the Top 100, continued his quick rise through the Twins' system with a promotion to Double-A Pensacola on Tuesday.
