Angels add veteran righty Chavez

ANAHEIM -- The Angels added to their pitching mix on Friday, agreeing to a one-year deal with right-hander .
Chavez, 33, reportedly will earn $5.75 million, plus an additional $3 million in performance bonuses. In a corresponding roster move, the Angels designated outfielder Rafael Ortega for assignment.

The Angels have been in the market for pitchers who can start and relieve, and Chavez fits that bill. He pitched in relief last season, making 62 appearances between the Dodgers and Blue Jays. Chavez started 26 games for the A's in 2015 and made 21 starts with Oakland in '14.
The Angels' current rotation mix includes , , , , and . Angels general manager Billy Eppler said this week the club would like to give JC Ramirez a look as a starter in Spring Training.
Chavez has roots in Southern California. He was born in San Gabriel, went to A.B. Miller High School in Fontana and played his college baseball at Riverside Community College before being selected by the Rangers in the 42nd round of the 2002 Draft.
Chavez is 15-23 with a 4.14 ERA in 49 starts during his nine-year Major League career. He pitched a career-high 157 innings in 2015 with Oakland. Chavez posted a 4.43 ERA in 62 relief appearances this year, striking out 63 in 67 innings.
