PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks dropped another game on the field and in the standings Wednesday night as they fell to the Marlins, 4-2, at Chase Field.
The loss, combined with the Padres' win over the Rockies, dropped the Diamondbacks to 3 1/2 games behind San Diego for the final National League Wild Card spot with nine games left to play. The two teams will face each other in a three-game series to close out the regular season in San Diego.
The Marlins jumped on top 2-0 in the second inning when Heriberto Hernández drove home one run with an infield single to third, with another coming around to score on the play on Nolan Arenado's errant throw to first.
Pavin Smith cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning with a home run to right-center.
Miami, though, pushed the lead to 4-1 in the third on Jakob Marsee's two-run homer.
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly went 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits.
